(58.3 cm.) high

Lot Description	A large gray schist relief of the Gods entreating Buddha to teach Gandhara, 2nd/3rd centuty Seated on a square throne with his right hand raised in abhaya mudra and the left clutching the end of his robe, the face with large eyes beneath arching brows centered by an urna and surmounted by an ushnisha secured with a circlet, flanked by Indra and Brahma and further gods on either side dressed in princely robes and elaborate turbans, all figures each backed by a halo, with a celestial flying figure at top right 26 1/8 in. (66.3 cm.) wide
Lot Notes	After his enlightenment, the gods, led by Indra and Brahma, requested the Buddha to preach; for other examples of this scene, see H. Ingholt, Gandharan Art in Pakistan, 1957, cat. nos. 72 and 73, p. 68.
